How Much Should You Tip Your Movers? (2026 Guide)

By Joe Caronna·April 11, 2026·6 min read

I get asked this question a lot, and I want to answer it honestly. Tipping movers is one of those situations nobody knows how to handle. People do not want to insult the crew by tipping too little, and they do not want to get taken advantage of either. And a lot of customers are embarrassed to ask.

After running Castle Express since 2013 and talking to thousands of customers about this, here is the straight answer.

Is tipping expected?

Yes, but it is not required. Tipping movers is similar to tipping at a restaurant. It is standard practice in the industry, customers know they will probably do it, and the crew appreciates it. But nobody is going to chase you to your car if you do not tip. If you feel the crew did a great job, a tip is the best way to say thank you.

How much is standard

There are two common approaches:

Percentage method: 15 to 20 percent of the total move cost. If your move cost $1,500, that would be a $225 to $300 tip split between the crew.

Flat rate per mover: $20 to $50 per mover for a half day (under 4 hours), or $40 to $80 per mover for a full day (4 to 8 or more hours).

Most customers we see use the flat rate method because it is simpler to split. If you had a 3-man crew work a full 6 hour day, tipping each crew member $50 to $60 is in the range of what most people do.

When to tip more

There are moves where the crew goes above and beyond, and those are worth recognizing:

- Long carry distances: If the crew had to carry everything over 100 feet from the truck to the door, or up a long driveway in West Hartford or Glastonbury. - Lots of stairs: Every flight of stairs matters. A 3rd floor walkup is brutal on the crew. - Heavy specialty items: Pianos, gun safes, pool tables, large antiques. - Extreme weather: 95 degrees in July or 20 degrees in January with snow on the ground. - Exceptional attitude: Some crews just show up ready to work and treat your stuff like their own. That deserves recognition.

When tipping less (or nothing) is understandable

On the flip side, if the move did not go well, you do not have to tip like it did. Honest movers understand this:

- The crew showed up hours late without communication - Something important got damaged and the crew did not handle it well - The crew had a bad attitude or took long breaks - You caught someone being careless

If any of these happened on a Castle Express move, I want to hear about it. Call me directly. We will make it right.

How to tip

Cash is best. Hand the tip directly to each mover individually, not just the crew lead. The crew lead will probably pool and redistribute, but handing it out individually is the right gesture and makes sure nobody is forgotten.

Most customers tip at the end of the move, after everything is unloaded and placed. A few tip the crew lead at the start as a gesture of good faith. Both work.

If you do not have cash, most movers will take Venmo or Cash App. Ask the crew lead.

Alternatives to cash tips

Cash is not the only way to show appreciation:

- Cold drinks: Water, Gatorade, or soda in a cooler. Our guys drink a lot on a hot summer move. - Lunch: Pizza, subs, or anything easy. For a full day move this is genuinely appreciated. - Snacks: Granola bars, chips, fruit. - A genuine thank you: Mean it, say it to each crew member. - A Google review: If the crew did great work, a specific positive review helps the company and the individual movers get recognized. This matters more than you might think.

The honest truth from my side

I am not writing this to ask for tips. Castle Express pays our experienced crews a fair wage and we do not rely on tips to make up for low pay. But the guys work hard, and when they do a great job, a tip is a real and meaningful thank you.

If you are thinking about move costs overall, I wrote a breakdown of what movers actually cost in Connecticut in 2026 that covers the full picture. Tipping should be factored in when you are planning your total move budget.
