How to Move a Sleep Number Bed: The Complete Guide from a Professional Moving Crew

By Joe Caronna·April 1, 2026·6 min read

The Bed That Breaks Every Rule

Sleep Number beds are one of the most common specialty items we move at Castle Express. They are also one of the most mishandled. We have seen DIY moves go wrong, and we have gotten calls from families who damaged their mattress, lost pump components, or could not get the base back together after a move.

Here is exactly how our crew does it, step by step.

Step 1: Inflate the Mattress to 100 Before Disassembly

This is the most important step and the one most people skip. Before you do anything else, use the Sleep Number remote or app to inflate both chambers of the mattress to a firmness setting of 100. A fully inflated mattress is rigid and holds its shape during handling. A deflated mattress is floppy, heavy, and nearly impossible to move without folding, which can permanently damage the internal air chambers.

Once the mattress is at 100, disconnect the air hose from the pump. The pump stays with the base, the mattress moves separately.

Step 2: Bag and Label Every Component

Sleep Number beds have a lot of small parts: remotes, power cords, air hoses, pump components, and base connectors. Before you disassemble anything, get a set of resealable bags and label each one. Our crew labels every bag with the room it came from and what it connects to. This makes reassembly at the new home straightforward instead of a guessing game.

Take a photo of the base frame before you start taking it apart. This gives you a reference point when you reassemble.

Step 3: Disassemble the Adjustable Base Frame Carefully

This is where most moves get complicated. Modern adjustable base frames, the kind that raise your head or feet, are heavy, mechanical, and were often assembled inside the room they live in. That means legs were attached, sections were bolted together, and the frame was never meant to travel through a doorway as one piece.

Here is what our crew does:

Remove all legs first. Most adjustable bases have legs that unscrew or unbolt from the bottom. Set these aside in a labeled bag.

Separate the sections. Many adjustable bases, especially split king configurations, come apart into two independent pieces. Disconnect the power cables between sections before separating them.

Disconnect and coil all power cords. Wrap them carefully and secure them so they do not catch or snag during the move.

Check the doorway clearance before you try to move the frame out. Adjustable bases are wide and low to the ground. Measure the doorway and plan your exit route before you lift anything.

Step 4: Move the Mattress First

With the mattress inflated to 100 and the base disassembled, move the mattress out first. Use a mattress bag to protect it. Keep it flat or on its side, never fold it. Sleep Number mattresses are not traditional spring or foam mattresses and should be treated as a specialty item.

Step 5: Move the Base Sections

Move each section of the base frame carefully. These frames are heavier than they look because of the mechanical components and motors inside. Use two people on each section and watch doorframes and walls. Scratching a wall is annoying. Bending a frame rail on a $3,000 adjustable base is a much bigger problem.

Step 6: Reassemble at the New Home

Reassembly is the reverse of disassembly, but it helps to do it methodically. Bring your photos and your labeled bags. Connect the base sections first, attach the legs, run the power cables, then place the mattress and reconnect the air hose to the pump. Power on the system and test both chambers before you make the bed.

Most Sleep Number systems will need to recalibrate after a move. Follow the instructions in the app or manual for your specific model.

When to Call the Pros

If your Sleep Number is a split king with dual adjustable bases, if you have a tight staircase or narrow hallway, or if your bed was assembled in the room years ago and has never been moved, call a professional crew. The risk of damaging a $3,000 to $5,000 bed is not worth saving the cost of movers.
