Moving Does Not Have to Be Overwhelming
Moving is consistently ranked as one of life's most stressful events. But most of that stress comes from uncertainty, not from the move itself. When you know exactly what to do and when to do it, the whole process becomes manageable.
This guide covers every step from the moment you decide to move to the day you are settled in your new home. Whether you are relocating across Hartford County or moving from Connecticut to another state, the process is the same.
Step 1: Set Your Date and Budget
Pick a move date as early as possible. If you have flexibility, weekday moves and mid-month dates tend to be less expensive and easier to schedule. Set a realistic budget that includes movers, packing supplies, deposits, utility setup fees, and a buffer for unexpected costs.
Step 2: Hire a Moving Company
This is the most important decision you will make. A good moving company makes everything easier. A bad one can turn your move into a nightmare.
Look for a company that is licensed, insured, and transparent about pricing. Castle Express operates under USDOT 2307446, MC-990616, and CT Permit C-1768. We hold an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Always verify credentials before signing anything.
Get an in-home or video estimate, not just a number over the phone. Any mover who quotes you without seeing your belongings is guessing, and you will pay for that guess on move day. Request your free estimate from Castle Express and we will walk through everything with you.
Step 3: Declutter Before You Pack
Moving is the best excuse you will ever have to get rid of things you do not need. Go through every room and every closet. If you have not used something in a year, it probably does not need to come with you. Donate usable items, sell what has value, and toss what is worn out.
Every item you remove before packing saves time and money. Fewer items means fewer boxes, less truck space, and a faster move.
Step 4: Gather Packing Supplies
You will need more boxes than you think. Stock up on small, medium, and large boxes, plus packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, and markers. Specialty items like wardrobe boxes and dish pack kits are worth the investment for fragile or hanging items.
Castle Express provides packing materials for full-service moves, and we can supply boxes and specialty containers for customers who prefer to pack themselves.
Step 5: Pack Strategically
Start with the rooms you use least: guest bedrooms, storage areas, basements, and closets. Work your way toward the kitchen and bathrooms, which you will need until the last day.
Pack heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes. Fill every box completely so it does not collapse when stacked. Label the top and at least one side of every box with the room name and a short description of the contents.
Step 6: Handle the Logistics
There are several administrative tasks that are easy to forget but important to complete before move day.
Mail forwarding. Set up forwarding through USPS at least a week before you move.
Utilities. Schedule disconnection at your current address and connection at your new one. Aim to have everything running before you arrive.
Elevator and parking. If either location has restricted access, reserve elevator time and loading zones in advance.
Address updates. Start notifying banks, insurance providers, subscriptions, your employer, and the CT DMV of your new address.
Step 7: Prepare for Move Day
The week before your move, finish packing everything except daily essentials. Pack an essentials bag with chargers, medications, toiletries, a change of clothes, important documents, snacks, and water.
Confirm all details with your moving company. Review the arrival window, special handling requirements, and anything that has changed since your estimate.
Defrost your refrigerator at least 24 hours before the move if it is being transported.
Step 8: Move Day
Be present and available. Your crew will need guidance on what goes, what stays, and where things should be placed at the new home. Do a final walkthrough of your old home before the truck leaves. Check every room, every closet, and every storage area.
At your new home, direct boxes to the correct rooms during unloading. The more organized the unload, the less work you have afterward.
Step 9: Unpack With a Plan
Start with the essentials: kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms. Get the basics functional before worrying about decorating or organizing storage areas. Break down boxes as you go to keep the space manageable.
If you booked full-service unpacking, your crew will handle placement and box removal so you can focus on settling in.
Step 10: Settle In
Update your driver's license and vehicle registration with the Connecticut DMV within 48 hours. Test every utility and report any issues immediately. Introduce yourself to your neighbors. Explore your new neighborhood.
And if your movers did a great job, leave them a Google review. It is the best way to help other families find a company they can trust.
