Mattresses are one of the most awkward and underestimated items to move. They are heavy, unwieldy, and surprisingly easy to damage if handled incorrectly. After years of moving families across Hartford County and Western Massachusetts, our crew has seen every mattress mistake in the book. Here is how to do it right.
Use a Mattress Bag
Before anything else, invest in a mattress bag. These are inexpensive plastic covers that protect your mattress from dirt, moisture, and tears during the move. You can find them at any home improvement store for under $20. Memory foam and pillow-top mattresses are especially vulnerable to staining and should always be bagged.
Never Fold a Mattress
This is the most common mistake we see. Folding a mattress, even briefly, can permanently damage the inner coils, foam layers, or memory foam cells. Always keep your mattress flat or standing on its side. If you cannot fit it flat in your vehicle, stand it on its long edge and secure it upright.
Transport It in a Covered Vehicle
A mattress strapped to the roof of a car or sticking out of a pickup truck bed is a recipe for disaster. Wind, rain, and road debris can ruin a mattress in minutes. Always transport your mattress inside a moving truck or enclosed vehicle. If you are renting a truck, measure the interior height first. A king mattress is typically 80 inches long and needs clearance.
Secure It Properly
Whether your mattress is lying flat or standing on its side, it needs to be secured with moving straps or rope. A shifting mattress can damage other items in the truck and become a hazard if it falls. Our crews always double-strap mattresses and place them against the truck wall when standing upright.
Carry It With Two People
A queen or king mattress typically weighs between 100 and 150 pounds and is nearly impossible to maneuver safely alone through doorways, down stairs, or around corners. Always use two people. Bend at the knees, communicate with your partner, and take your time on stairs.
Know When to Call the Pros
If you have a specialty mattress (pillow top, memory foam, adjustable base, or California king) or if you are navigating tight staircases, sharp turns, or multiple flights of stairs, it is worth calling a professional moving crew. The cost of a damaged mattress far exceeds the cost of a professional move.
