Moving to Ellington, CT - What to Know Before You Go

By Joe Caronna·March 10, 2026·4 min read

Ellington doesn't get the same attention as some of the bigger Hartford County towns, but the people who live there tend to stay there - and the people who move in quickly understand why.

Our crews have moved hundreds of families in and out of Ellington over the years. Here's what we've learned.

The neighborhoods and roads to know

Ellington is spread out. The town center sits along Main Street near Kloter Farms and the Hall Memorial Library, but the residential areas fan out in every direction from there. Route 83 is the main north-south artery - if you're moving to or from the eastern side of town near Crystal Lake, expect that road to be part of your move day.

The Crystal Lake area in particular has some tight roads and limited truck turnaround spots. If you're moving into a lakeside property, tell your moving company in advance so they can plan accordingly.

The Shenipsit State Forest corridor on the eastern edge of town means some roads dead-end or narrow unexpectedly. We always do a pre-move route check for Ellington jobs.

What the housing stock looks like

Ellington is primarily single-family homes on larger lots - colonials, capes, and ranches from the 1960s through the 1990s, with newer construction filling in since. The town has grown significantly since 2000 and that growth shows in the variety of neighborhoods.

If you're moving from an apartment into your first Ellington home, expect the move to take longer than you think - lot sizes here are generous, and long driveways mean more carry distance.

Things we hear from people moving to Ellington

The most common thing we hear: "I didn't realize how quiet it was going to be." Ellington sits roughly equidistant from I-84 and I-91, which means access to Hartford and Springfield is easy, but the town itself feels removed from the highway noise.

People also consistently mention the schools and the Four Town Fair - Ellington hosts it every September alongside Enfield, East Windsor, and Somers, and it's a genuine community tradition.
