Southwick is one of those towns that feels like a well-kept secret. It sits right on the Connecticut border - we cross into it regularly from our Enfield base - and the people who live there tend to like the fact that it doesn't get too much attention.
Here's what we've learned from moving families in and out of Southwick over the years.
The geography matters on move day
Southwick is more rural than its neighbors. Congamond Lakes straddles the CT-MA state line and draws people who want waterfront living without paying Berkshires prices. The homes around the lakes tend to have longer driveways, sometimes unpaved, and limited truck turnaround space.
Route 57 is your main east-west corridor. College Highway (Route 202) runs north-south. If you're moving to a home off either of these, the access is usually fine. If you're going deeper into the wooded areas or toward the Southwick Rail Trail corridor, let your movers know in advance so they can plan accordingly.
What the housing stock looks like
Southwick has a mix of older capes and ranches along with newer colonials built in the last 20-30 years. There's also a meaningful population of lakeside homes and some large lot properties on the western side of town toward Westfield.
If you're moving from a CT suburb into Southwick, expect more space - larger lots, longer carries from the truck to the door, and occasionally a set of outdoor steps that aren't immediately obvious from the listing photos.
The CT border is not a problem for us
We're based in Enfield, CT. Crossing into Massachusetts - including Southwick - is something we do regularly. We're licensed in both states (USDOT 2307446, CT Permit C-1768) and we know the roads on both sides of the line.
Castle Express reaches Southwick in about 30-35 minutes from our facility. For a local move within Southwick or between Southwick and a neighboring town like Agawam, Westfield, or Suffield, we're one of the closest full-service options you'll find.
What to ask before you book any mover
Make sure whoever you hire is actually licensed to operate in Massachusetts. Not all CT movers are. Ask for their USDOT number and verify it at safer.fmcsa.dot.gov before you sign anything.
If you're planning a move to or from Southwick, give us a call. We'll give you a straight answer on timing, cost, and what to expect.
