How Much Does Moving Cost in Massachusetts? (2026 Guide)

By Joe Caronna·June 24, 2026·6 min read

We are based in Enfield, Connecticut, which sits right on the Massachusetts border. Springfield is about fifteen minutes up the road. So when someone in Western Massachusetts calls us, the first question is almost always the same one I get from people in Connecticut: how much is this going to cost?

It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that it depends on a few things. But "it depends" is a frustrating answer when you are trying to budget for a move. So after more than a decade moving families across Massachusetts and Connecticut, here is a real breakdown of what you should expect to pay in 2026.

What a local move actually costs in Massachusetts

Most local moves in Massachusetts are priced by the hour, the same way they are in Connecticut. In 2026, here is what you should expect to see from legitimate, licensed movers in the Western MA area:

2-man crew with truck: $150 to $220 per hour 3-man crew with truck: $200 to $300 per hour 4-man crew with truck: $250 to $400 per hour

These rates cover the truck, fuel, basic equipment, and the movers themselves. Packing materials, full-value protection, and specialty items are usually separate.

To turn that into a real number: a 2-bedroom apartment in Springfield or Chicopee usually takes a 3-man crew about 4 to 6 hours. A 3-bedroom home in Westfield or Ludlow runs closer to 6 to 9 hours. So a typical local move in the Pioneer Valley lands somewhere between $1,200 and $2,800 depending on size, access, and how much packing you have done yourself.

Why Boston costs more than Springfield

If you are moving in or out of Boston, expect to pay more, sometimes a lot more. Boston has parking that is hard to find, buildings that require elevator reservations and certificates of insurance, narrow streets, and triple-deckers with staircases that were not built with a sofa in mind. All of that adds time, and time is what you are paying for.

Western Massachusetts is a different story. Springfield, Holyoke, Westfield, and the surrounding Pioneer Valley towns are far more reasonable to move in than the Boston metro. That is the part of the state we serve, and it is one of the reasons our customers there tend to come in well under what a Boston move would cost.

What drives your total

The hourly rate is only part of the picture. Here is what actually moves the number:

Distance. A local move across town is priced by the hour. A move from Springfield down to Hartford is still close enough to stay hourly. Once you cross into true long distance, pricing usually switches to weight and mileage.

Stairs and access. Every flight of stairs adds time. A lot of the older housing stock in Holyoke and Springfield has narrow staircases and tight landings. That is not the crew being slow. That is physics.

Season and timing. Summer weekends are the most expensive time to move, and around here the college calendar makes it worse. If you have flexibility, a weekday in October will always cost less than the last Saturday in August near Amherst or Northampton.

Specialty items. Pianos, safes, gun cabinets, and large antiques need experienced handling and sometimes special equipment. These get priced on their own.

Packing. Pack yourself and you save on labor. Have us pack for you and it is an additional service, but it is often worth it for fragile and high-value items.

Long-distance and interstate moves

If you are leaving Massachusetts entirely, or coming in from out of state, the pricing model changes. Long-distance moves are usually based on the weight of your shipment and the miles traveled, not an hourly rate. Depending on the size of your home and how far you are going, an interstate move typically runs anywhere from about $2,500 to well over $10,000.

One thing worth knowing if you are moving between Massachusetts and Connecticut: because we sit right on the border, a lot of those cross-state moves are short enough that we can handle them efficiently without the big interstate price tag. If that is your situation, our long-distance moving page walks through how we price it, and our guide on long-distance moving from CT and MA covers what to expect.

Hidden fees to watch for

This is where people get burned. Watch for these in any estimate you receive:

Fuel surcharges added on top of the hourly rate. If the rate is $200 an hour, that should already include fuel. If a company bills extra for gas, ask why.

Stair fees that were not disclosed upfront. Stairs already take longer, and that shows up in the time. You should not be billed twice for the same staircase.

Minimum hour requirements. Some companies require a 4-hour minimum even if your move takes 2. Ask before you book.

Travel time from the yard. Some companies charge you for the drive from their warehouse to your door. Ask whether travel time is included.

How to keep the cost down

Moving does not have to break the bank. A few things genuinely lower the bill:

The biggest one is decluttering before you pack. The fewer boxes and pieces of furniture, the less you pay for labor and truck space. Sell or donate what you are not bringing with you.

Book early. Last-minute moves cost more because availability is tight, especially in summer.

Move off-peak if you can. A weekday or a mid-month date almost always beats a summer weekend.

And pack the small stuff yourself. Letting us handle the heavy and fragile items while you box up your own books and kitchenware is a good way to split the work and the cost.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a local move cost in Massachusetts in 2026? Most local moves in Western MA are priced hourly. A typical 2-bedroom runs roughly $1,200 to $1,800 and a 3-bedroom home about $1,800 to $2,800, depending on access, packing, and the day you move. Boston-area moves cost more.

Why are moving prices higher in 2026? Fuel, labor, and equipment costs have all risen, and demand for professional movers keeps climbing during peak season. The good news is that an honest, accurate estimate still protects you from the bigger problem, which is surprise fees on move day.

Is moving in Boston more expensive than Western Massachusetts? Yes. Parking restrictions, building requirements, traffic, and older multi-floor buildings all add labor time in Boston. Western MA towns like Springfield, Chicopee, and Westfield are considerably more affordable to move in.

How can I lower my moving costs? Declutter before you pack, book early, avoid summer weekends, and pack the small items yourself. Each one trims labor time, which is what you are paying for.

Is hiring professional movers worth it? For most people, yes. Experienced movers protect your furniture and fragile items, carry insurance, and save you the physical toll and risk of doing it yourself, which usually matters more than the day rate.
